SACRED SPACE
The Springdale Cultural Center is located in the diverse community of Springdale, Arkansas. The rapidly growing town of 80,000 people is in the northwest corner of the state. Springdale is home to a population of 12,000 Marshallese Americans; the majority take part in Baptist worship. The site is located just north of downtown Springdale and south of Bluff Cemetery, separated by Spring Creek. The church consists of two forms, one housing the sacred spaces and the other accommodating the education and gathering. The design brings to life three universal symbols of baptism: the cross, water, and light. The sacred space is pushed north to establish connection with the creek and Bluff cemetery, while the education form is pushed south, reaching out to the community. The church is oriented to bring in the morning light for early congregations. South light emits through the steeple for afternoon congregations, projecting an ambient light from behind the stage, highlighting the cross and baptistery. The materials used create a warm and inviting atmosphere for a space devoted to serenity for the community.
